SQL 2005 Extended Support Ends

SQL 2005The unveiling SQL 2005 was a major step forward over the previous SQL 2000, and was a watershed moment for pushing SQL into the modern age.  It’s a little sad to see it go, but for those still running SQL 2005, extended support ends on April 12, 2016.

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to start thinking about upgrading away from SQL 2005.  The improvements for SQL Server 2014 are significant, but a few of the more notable improvements include:

  • A study commissioned on behalf of Microsoft in July 2014 showed that upgrading to SQL 2014 from SQL 2005 would have a payback in 9.5 months for most organizations
  • SQL 2014 runs up to 13X faster than SQL 2005
  • Security enhancements make SQL 2014 less vulnerable to attacks than any prior releases

If you’re using SQL 2005, however, it may also mean that you’re running an older version of your internal software.  Users looking to come current to a later version of Microsoft Dynamics GP can see the hardware requirements online to better understand what might need to change.
